2018 album of the year list for Rui Eduardo Paes and João Esteves da Silva.

“(…) Certain is that if the words give flair and conduct the music, the viola assumes behaviourally the roll of the mentioned serpent that moves towards the infinity, zigzagging through the three movements of the piece almost as, although the separation between parts/tracks of the CD (10 in total), there isn’t a beginning or an ending, neither a tail or a head.
José Valente either resolutely enters into the realm of contemporary music, in its more classical or sophisticated substance (yes, there are occasions that we think of Paganinni and Shostakovich, depending the performance or composition’s accent), either interiorizes characteristics from other musical styles. (…) The musician from Porto is back, with a work that only doesn’t surprise you, because one could guess, already in “Os Pássaros estão estragados”, that this would be his destination. ”
Rui Eduardo Paes, jazz.pt magazine.

“Three years after the excellent “Os Pássaros estão estragados”, the composer and violist José Valente returns with “Serpente Infinita” to the essential themes that he then launched to better understand our contemporary times: freedom or the lack of it, the apathy, the banality of the daily life. (…) the Oporto’s musician offers us a dense and unrest full work. (…) Valente’s approach, once delicate, once dramatically rough, conciliates the rigorousness of classical music, the challenge of free improvisation and the primordial energy of rock music, with Marta Bernardes declamations, being the explorative key for the intimacy between music and words.”
António Branco, Diário do Alentejo

Duarte Fortuna, Threshold Magazine.
